Your AC is your best friend during the hot Austin summer months and you certainly don’t want it to break down on the day you need it the most. That is why it is important to keep it in tip top shape and running efficiently to keep your home cool and comfortable during those sweltering summer days and nights.

Your AC repair company or HVAC service may offer a regular maintenance program for heating and cooling systems for a small monthly fee. While some might think it is an added expense that is unnecessary, it can save extend the life of your air conditioner and save you money on costly repairs or even replacements. Here are a few reasons why you should get a maintenance plan if it is offered:

Avoid Your AC breaking down

This is probably the number one most important reason, avoiding a breakdown. There are usually signs that something is going on, like a loud noise or a grinding sound, and quite often we ignore it hoping it will go away. The truth is that ignoring it long enough will make it go away but not in the way you think. The noise will stop because your AC is no longer working. A system that is not well maintained is a problem waiting to happen, and usually at the most inconvenient time.

Discounts and Specials

If you are a regular customer you may be entitled to special discounts and services as a reward for continued service. These discounts can be applied to anything from AC repair in Austin to a new installation of a high-efficiency system. You may also be eligible for special response time during holidays and times when they are particularly busy. With a service plan that means if something happens a technician can be there within a couple hours instead of a couple of days to fix it. This is extremely important on those hot August days when temperatures hit 90 degrees and above.

Save Money on Utilities

A system that is not working properly consumes more energy because it has to work harder to compensate. A dirty air filter, clogged condensate drain or parts that need replaced can’t function at their best and will often need more time to complete tasks which means that your system will cycle more often or continuously until those repairs are made costing you more money. Regular maintenance will spot problems early on before they have a chance to cause damage.

Pay Less for Scheduled AC Repair

With a maintenance plan you will pay less for repairs because your costs are included in your flat rate service. Your plan is set at a low rate that includes all the fees and costs so you don’t have to pay separately for any service. Parts and labor are included, often at a discount so you will never pay the full rate.

Convenient

Having someone else to remember when your system needs a cleaning is very convenient. The appointments are scheduled when it is convenient for you taking the hassle out of making service calls.

A preventative maintenance plan saves money, time and extends the life of your cooling system. It is much more costly to have to call for emergency service or to have to purchase a whole new system if it cannot be repaired. Keeping your AC in good working order ensures that it will be there when you need it.

Here are a few of the services that are included in a maintenance plan:

•    Check thermostat
•    Lubricate all moving parts
•    Clean condensate drain
•    Tighten hoses and connections
•    Monitor refrigerant
•    Clean coils
•    Check air filters
•    Check equipment for tears or signs of wear

Cooler weather is here, No doubt about it. It may be time to start thinking about heating your home, and keeping your family warm this winter. If any of the below steps make you feel uncomfortable about checking out your heating or furnace system, be sure to contact the licensed and professional heating and furnace contractors at ABA in Austin to perform a System Inspection for your home.

Step One: Testing the Furnace Thermostat
Turn on your furnace to check that it's operable if you haven't operated the heat so far this season.Switch your thermostat to the heating mode and increase the temperature to a higher setting. Most thermostats go up to about 90 degrees, but we only recommend setting it about 5 degrees higher than what your normal operating temperature will be during the winter. If no hot air comes out of the vents, try turning up the thermostat to a  higher temperature then you previously set it at. There is normally a short or brief delay, before the furnace blower motor turns on and starts blowing warm air. Normally, the air temperature will begin to get warmer slowly. vents warming quickly. If you don't hear air moving after a couple minutes or don't feel the air getting warmer, switch the thermostat to the off position, where no air is blowing, and you cannot hear the furnace blower motor running. At this early stage, you might have a broken furnace in need of repair, but lets look at some other things first.

Step Two: Checking the Contacts and Electrical Connections
Check for dust, dirt or obstructions in or around the thermostat by removing the thermostat cover. Dirt or dust on the sensitive electronics can distort the thermostat's calibration and temperature regulation. Try not to be rough with the removal of the cover, as jarring the unit can cause the thermostat to malfunction. Older thermostats (non electronic) have to be level on the wall, so check that the thermostat is perfectly level to the wall and surroundings. If you find excess dirt or corrosion on the electrical contacts, contact an ABA furnace repair professional in Austin to replace it for you. If the thermostat appears clean and level, more than likely this is not your problem.

Step Three: Checking the Fuses and Circuit Breaker
Check your main fuse box for your heater or furnace unit. Look at the fuse or circuit breaker for the furnace. If you can see that the circuit breaker for the furnace is tripped to the off position (or half-way in some older models), switch it fully to the off position (you should hear or feel a click when it is fully on way or the other), then firmly return it to the on position, again, feeling a click. If it trips back to the off position again immediately or after trying to test your furnace system again, there could be a problem requiring professional furnace repair, or an electrical repair service. Never attempt to adjust the electrical service box yourself, as these are very high voltage systems that can cause severe injury or death.

If your furnace circuit breaker was not tripped, try turning on the thermostat again and testing your system again. If there is not any warm air, or your furnace system remains broken, take a look at the outside of the furnace itself for any obvious blockage or obstructions, like a buildup of dirt and dust, burn or heat marks, noises or any other indications of a malfunctioning furnace. On newer high efficiency furnace models, the duct work may be vented out to one of the side walls of your home. While there check your furnace filter and replace it if needed. Air filters should be checked at least every three months on any HVAC system.

If after performing all the above steps, it may be time to contact a licensed and professional furnace and heating repair technician. 5 Tips For Maintaining Your Furnace

Winter is almost here, so what kind of shape is your furnace in? ABA is a furnace repair contractor in Austin, and we get a lot of phone calls from concerned Austin area homeowners who want to know what they can be doing to keep their home's furnace in good shape. Regardless of whether you have a gas or electric heater, you need to be doing what you can to keep this heater system in good shape.

5 tips for maintaining your furnace this winter:
  1. Check to be sure that the pilot light is burning. There are some units that when the light goes out, they have to be re-lit by hand.
  2. Check the blower and carefully vacuum out any built-up dust or debris in or around the heater.
  3. Check the top and bottom of the unit for any signs of corrosion, or rust.
  4. Check the flue for any gaps or dents that could prevent it from ventilating properly.
  5. Check to make sure that furniture, boxes, curtains, rugs, etc. are far enough away from the unit so that they don't inhibit air flow or potentially cause a fire.
If you notice a gas smell in your home, CONTACT ABA IMMEDIATELY. This is incredibly dangerous and could lead to an explosion or even death! Trying to repair your furnace yourself can be dangerous, as most systems have high voltage, or main gas systems leading into the unit. By thinking you could save some money on your repair by doing it yourself, you could potentially do more harm than good to either yourself, or your home.

Call 512-687-1463 to schedule an appointment with an ABA furnace repair technician today. We offer fast appointment times, and professional service. To talk with a heater repair or replacement professional today, call now.
